Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are used to help to stop erosion or slope movement or to provide support for significant grade changes.  They can be made out of a number of different materials, including natural stone, brick, concrete or timber.  But recently, segmental retaining walls have become more popular.  They are easier to handle and can be purchased in a variety of different finishes.  Stronger and better-looking than poured concrete, they are also better for the environment.

Retaining walls are built in a huge variety of shapes and sizes.  They can be terraced with planting areas and steps, and they can be any size from a small wall around a flower bed to a large structure supporting a hillside.  Whatever your requirements are, there will be a retaining wall to match them.

With the importance of the functionality of retaining walls it is essential that they are professionally designed and constructed.  The forces that they have to withstand are significant, particularly at the toe of the bank, where they are bearing the pressure of the ground above.  They also need to be designed in such a way that water cannot build up behind them, as the pressure will weaken, and eventually break, the retaining wall.
