Garden Walls
Garden walls originated as defenses against straying animals, strong winds and marauding
neighbors, and while there shouldn't be too much need to keep neighbors out today, walls are still used to provide
protection from the wind and animals.
But as well as being functional, walls add to the aesthetic appeal of the garden, particularly if they are made
of attractive materials such as natural stone. Garden walls quickly blend in and complement the plantings and lend some structure
to lead the eye to particular areas, as well as being useful for sitting areas around patios.
As well as being attractive in themselves, garden walls can be adorned with climbing plants and rock plants, or
various forms of art - such as plaques and sculptures. Many walls are built with niches to hold such art, or
with fountains to add a pleasant background sound as well as a visual effect to the garden.
Another practical aspect of garden walls is their ability to help with the growth of the plants nearby.
For example, south and west-facing walls will be exposed to the sun and the plants there will benefit from the heat
retention. Similarly, north and east-facing walls will benefit plants that are more comfortable in a shady
area.
Garden walls can help with may other functions: They can define parts of the garden, level the ground around a
plant, provide privacy for a patio or deck, or help to stop soil erosion on sloping ground. They can also be used
to build flower beds and raised vegetable beds.
Using garden walls in landscaping the garden will also add to the appeal of the house, an important aspect if it
is ever to be sold. An attractive mature garden will add to the value as well as making it easier to sell the
home.
